DIY weld-on bead locks are a type of wheel modification that allows off-road enthusiasts to convert their existing wheels into bead lock wheels.
The DIY aspect of these weld-on bead locks refers to the fact that, with the right tools and skills, individuals can transform their wheels into bead locks at home instead of purchasing pre-made bead lock wheels. This allows for customization and cost-saving benefits.
To achieve this modification the bead lock rings are welded directly onto the wheel, creating a secure lock between the tire bead and the wheel.
The primary purpose of bead locks is to prevent the tire from dislodging from the wheel during extreme off-road conditions, such as rock crawling or deep mud. The bead lock ring clamps the tire bead securely between the ring and the wheel, keeping it firmly in place even with low tire pressure.
By converting their wheels into bead locks, off-roaders can run lower tire pressures for improved traction and better off-road performance without the risk of losing the tire off the wheel. This is especially crucial for off-road enthusiasts who frequently push the limits of their vehicles and tires in challenging terrains.
